Rashford scores as Manchester United trash Real Betis
Marcus Rashford scored again as Manchester United defeated Real Betis with ease to advance to the quarterfinals of the Europa League. Rashford gave United the lead in the 55th minute with a powerful long-range shot that dipped into the bottom corner following an open first half.
The Red Devils performed extremely hard, and it is baffling that Real Betis did not score at some point.
Prior to United’s first goal, the hosts had plenty of scoring opportunities, including one from Betis’ Joaquin, whose early curling shot hit the outside of the post.
Betis nearly took an early lead through Juanmi, but the attacker missed the goal while in a great position to score as United struggled to maintain control in the first half.
The draw for the last eight takes place on Friday (12:00 GMT)
Rashford’s impressive form continues. He has scored 19 goals in 24 games since club football resumed after the World Cup.
The 25-year-old is still the Europa League’s leading scorer with six goals in eight games and is already in the midst of his most productive season offensively.
Erik ten Hag speaks to BT Sport
“I am happy but we like challenges and we knew before Betis is a really good team … we beat them twice so I think we performed very well … second half was much better though the energy was out of the opponent after the goal … we were much better on the ball … all the players did very well … we not only have 11 players, we have a squad … Pellistri had some really good actions, I’m really pleased with his performance … no red cards, no injuries … we have depth, but not that big!”
In their last seven away games in Europe against Spanish sides, Manchester United is unbeaten and has won five of those games (D2). In their first 26 such games across all of the European competition, they had only three victories (D11 L12).
