Man United forward Rachel Williams has officially put pen to paper over a new deal, seeing her contract extended by one year.
After finishing third in the WSL and reaching the FA Cup final last season, Man United is hoping to build a young squad for the future. The pieces are already being put together, with a new name at the top of the helm.
Matt Johnson, who replaced Polly Bancroft as the head of women's football at Man United, has now been given the role permanently. It's a solidified move, which gives Man United more security in this position going forward.
Rachel Williams secures one year contract extension
Another exciting piece of news for Man United is that Rachel Williams has signed a contract extension, which will see her at the club for at least one more year.
The backup striker is one of the more experienced players in the WSL, and she plays a key role at Man United. While she doesn't start every match, any substitution which sees Williams enter the pitch is enough to excite fans.
So, it's a positive step in the right direction for Man United. At least for one more year, Man United's main number 9, Elisabeth Terland, United's leading goal-scorer last season, will have backup.
Man United rely on Williams' experience
As mentioned, Man United is placing a key emphasis on promoting youth players. They would like to build a solid base to futureproof the club going forward. However, the decision to extend Williams' contract isn't in spite of that; in fact, it's a decision which helps to promote Man United's youth.
Despite being one of the senior figures, Williams is pivotal to Man United's youth movements. As pointed out by Cerys Jones, Williams is seen as a positive mentor, and one who consistently makes an effort to aid the comfort of Man United's less experienced players, often seen laughing, joking or in general conversation with them.
