Manchester United desperately need a new striker, but fans won't love a possible move they could make.

With dreams of landing Viktor Gyokeres likely gone, United may turn to Chelsea to find their solution.

According to John Cross of The Mirror, Chelsea have quoted £35 million for United to sign forward Christopher Nkunku. Cross notes that Nkunku is on United's shortlist.

It's not the first time United have been linked to him this summer. At one point, it sounded like Alejandro Garnacho might go the other way in a separate deal, although Chelsea's move for Jamie Gittens may have ended that.

Man United shouldn't pay £35 million for Christopher Nkunku

There's a reason why Chelsea is ready to move on from Nkunku for considerably less than the £52 million they signed him for two years ago. That's a clear sign.

Nkunku has scored six goals in 38 Premier League appearances for the West London club. Yes, six goals in 38 games. Admittedly, he only started 11 of those games, but if anything, that raises more concerns.

United need a No. 9 who can provide consistent goals and start most games. Nkunku hasn't proven he can do that at Chelsea. As a backup option to bring off the bench? Sure, but £35 million is a lot to pay for a second striker when they so badly need a game-changer.

While United's reported interest in Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has split opinion among the fanbase (and understandably so), he would make a far greater impact for Ruben Amorim's team. It would be a more expensive move for United, but they have to be willing to spend big to upgrade their No. 9 spot.

Fans still await the Bryan Mbeumo deal, with the delay understandably causing frustration. Being linked to a £35 million move for Nkunku isn't going to ease any concerns.
