Ruben Amorim has made a rocky start with Manchester United, winning 38 percent of his games after replacing Erik ten Hag. His only hope of turning things around is to get fully backed in this transfer window, but the alarm bells are ringing.

United look set to miss out on Viktor Gyokeres, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that talks are advancing between Arsenal and Sporting over a deal for the striker.

The response from Man United? Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, United are "making a shock move" to sign Calvert-Lewin, who is a free agent after his contract expired with Everton.

United desperately needs a game-changing goal-scorer, and with Bryan Mbeumo deal negotiations hitting a frustrating roadblock, it's understandable why fans' frustrations are growing by the day.

Talk about setting Amorim up to fail. Calvert-Lewin isn't the answer, and unless they find a top goal-scorer, the United boss may struggle to take this team up the league table.

Man United have to back Amorim. Landing Matheus Cunha at the beginning of the window was a statement signing, but the club has failed to build on it. Will the Mbeumo move even happen now? Can they fix their goalkeeping issue? Who would start in the No. 9 role if the season started today?

Man United could make the most underwhelming move imaginable by signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin

United have been linked to several strikers this summer, including Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku.

But they shouldn't sign Calvert-Lewin.

The former Everton striker hasn't finished a Premier League season with double-digit goals since 2021. He has never scored more than 16 times in a league campaign. All in all, he has 57 goals in 239 Premier League contests for Everton.

It's not the goal-scoring record that inspires much hope that he can solve United's biggest problem, especially if they have ambitions of competing near the top of the Premier League in the near future.

Yes, United finished 15th last season and have a mountain to climb, but this team is aiming to springboard back into contention.

United haven't done nearly enough to back Amorim. There's still time, but missing out on Gyokeres only to follow it by signing Calvert-Lewin will set Amorim up to fail.

And it could cost him his job.
