Manchester United made a significant statement in the transfer window by securing the signing of 18-year-old French defender Leny Yoro, despite strong interest from Real Madrid. The deal, worth up to £58.7 million, includes an initial fee of £52 million with an additional £6.7 million in potential add-ons. Yoro, who has signed a five-year contract, was a standout for Lille, playing 60 first-team games and earning a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season last term.

United’s ability to clinch Yoro’s signature over Madrid is a testament to the changes under their new footballing hierarchy, including sporting director Dan Ashworth. This summer has seen a more efficient and strategic approach from United, contrasting with their often chaotic transfer dealings in previous years.

Ashworth’s influence has been pivotal. United quickly wrapped up deals for top targets, avoiding the last-minute rush that often resulted in overpaying for their players. This was evident with the signing of Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £35.8 million and the agreement of personal terms with PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte as well, however, a fee is yet to be agreed with PSG for the transfer.

Additionally, United has been active in offloading players to make way for new talent. Scott McTominay is one player rumored to be on the move, making room in the squad for incoming midfielders. The departure of veteran Raphael Varane, who left when his contract expired, also opened up space in the defence, manifesting the club’s overhaul under the new INEOS leadership. Additionally, Van de Beek, Kambwala, and Greenwood have also been off-loaded to various clubs.

Yoro’s decision to join United was influenced by the club’s commitment to giving young players a platform to develop and the promise of regular first-team football. United’s pitch, backed by the club’s history and ambition, proved more appealing than a potential transfer to Madrid who were adamant on a valuation reportedly half of what United paid.

Under Erik ten Hag and the new footballing setup at United, the transfer strategy has been clear and very decisive for Manchester United. The efficient business conducted this summer, with high-profile signings and offloadings, reflects a renewed ambition and a more streamlined approach, setting the stage for a promising season ahead for the Red Devils.
