Erik ten Hag has suggested Antony is fighting for his place in the Manchester United team amid a frustrating spell at Old Trafford. The Brazilian winger has fallen down the pecking order and his future has been the subject of intense speculation.

Antony, 24, has made just one one-minute cameo appearance in all competitions so far this season. He's sat on the bench in four of five games and many question whether he has a future with the club.

Ten Hag was asked about Antony's situation ahead of Manchester United's clash with Barnsley in the third round of the Carabao Cup. He said (via Fabrizio Romano):

"Antony is fighting, fighting for his position. That's what we expect from every player who is in the squad at Man United, what they should do."

Antony arrived at Manchester United from Ajax in August 2022 for a reported £85 million. The deal makes him the club's second most expensive signing in history and it's been a burden on the 16-cap Brazil international.

The Selecao star was once heralded at Ajax and impressed under Ten Hag whom was keen to reunite with him two years ago. He bagged 24 goals and 22 assists in 82 games across competitions at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

However, Antony has failed to live up to expectations at United, managing 11 goals and five assists in 83 games. The Red Devils reportedly valued him at £25 million but broke the bank after haggling over his potential signing, per The Athletic.

The Old Trafford faithful have given contrasting views on Ten Hag insisting Antony is fighting for his spot in his team.

One fan seemed to back Antony in response to the manager's comment:

"He has to start tomorrow, or his career is over at United."

Another fan was more critical of the big-money signing:

"We want our 80 million back take a loan and pay it."

Other fans gave their takes with one writing:

"Ten Hag's statement seems more like a standard defense of a player rather than a strong endorsement of Antony's performance."

Another fan responded:

"Ten Hag’s message is clear—every player needs to battle for their spot. Antony’s fight is exactly what Manchester United needs!"

Will Antony be involved for Manchester United against Barnsley?

The most likely opportunity for Antony to get his Manchester United career back on track is through appearing in cup competitions. Amad Diallo has become Ten Hag's starting right-winger, and the Ivorian took his chance with aplomb.

Antony might expect to start against Barnsley whom the Red Devils host in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (September 17). He's yet to have a proper run out this season and has cut a frustrated figure on the bench.

The Brazilian contributed to United's journey to FA Cup glory last season, posting two goals and one assist in four games. He scored in his side's famous 4-3 win against Liverpool in the quarter-finals, which fans will remember fondly.
