Bruno Fernandes was criticised by Manchester United fans this weekend after his comment to former teammate Jadon Sancho. The Portuguese playmaker responded to the former Red Devils attacker's debut for Chelsea after completing a loan with an obligation to buy move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Sancho, 24, came off the bench in the Blues' 1-0 win against Bournemouth on Saturday (September 14). He assisted Christopher Nkunku for the winner against the Cherries and celebrated the win with a post on his Instagram account.

Fernandes, 30, responded in the comments and wished Sancho well while giving a glowing verdict of the English attacker's abilities. He wrote:

"Some player you (fire) keep that smile (raised hands)."

Manchester United fans hit out at Bruno Fernandes over social media comment

It shouldn't surprise anyone to learn that some of the Old Trafford faithful were in uproar over Fernandes' comment. Some felt he didn't lead by example as captain and given Sancho's unceremonious exit from the club he should distance himself from the player.

Sancho had a well-documented falling out with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag last season. He spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Borussia Dortmund but the pair reconciled for pre-season until he headed to Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

Fernandes is a popular figure at United and holds a good relationship with past and present players. We've seen this with Raphael Varane and David de Gea, the latter of whom he took a dig at the Red Devils for not giving a proper send-off.

One fan in uproar over Fernandes' comment was YouTuber Mark Goldbridge. He said on his United Stand channel:

"I just don't like it. I didn't like (Lisandro) Martinez after the Liverpool game (3-0 loss) having a picture with (Alexis) Mac Alister. I just don't dig it... I might be an old fossil, completely out of touch, but I don't like it."

There were some fans who felt Fernandes recieved unjustified heat for his comment. @TenHagEra on X wrote:

"Don’t know if I’m in the minority but I have absolutely no problem with this, they’re friends?"

Fernandes' comment is still up despite the backlash he's recieved for it. He's been vital for United regardless of his off-field antics, posting two assists in five games so far this season. His overall tally for the Red Devils is 79 goals and 68 assists in 238 games.

The Portugal international could be rested when United are next in action on Tuesday (September 17). Ten Hag's Reds face EFL League One outfit Barnsley in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
