Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has been excluded from the club's squad for their pre-season tour of the United States as he recovers from his long standing knee injury.
Malacia, signed for £15 million from Feyenoord, last played a competitive game over 13 months ago. His recovery from knee surgery has been prolonged, missing multiple deadlines set by the club. Initially expected to return in the autumn, and later by early February, the 24-year-old is still working towards full fitness at United's Carrington training ground.

Manchester United confirmed that Malacia would not be traveling to the United States, stating, "Tyrell Malacia is absent from the squad as he continues his rehabilitation from injury under the guidance of medical staff at Carrington." Despite participating in ball work during training earlier this month, it is thought to be best for him to continue his recovery at Carrington.
As Malacia remains sidelined, Manchester United has included a new signing, Leny Yoro, and England winger Jadon Sancho, on the squad. However, various internationals will miss the tour after being given time off following their participation in Euro 2024 and Copa America.

United's tour kicks off against Arsenal in Los Angeles on Saturday, followed by matches against Real Betis and Liverpool. With Malacia's prolonged absence, the club is considering signing a new left-back. Options include former Chelsea and Barcelona player Marcos Alonso and Feyenoord and Slovakia international David Hancko. Last year, United made a late move to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham following an injury to Luke Shaw who is again linked with a move to Manchester United.
Sam Murray and Harry Amass, United's specialist left-backs, are part of the pre-season tour squad. Murray, who joined Rochdale on loan but never played for them, started in the friendlies against Rosenborg and Rangers, with Amass replacing him at half-time in both games.
Malacia, who turns 25 next month, has not played for Manchester United since May 2023 and his last appearance was for the Netherlands against Croatia in the Nations League in June 2023. As he continues his rehabilitation, Manchester United is assessing their options to bolster the left back position ahead of the new season.
