According to Spanish newspaper AS, Manchester United are keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur outcast Sergio Reguilon this summer.

Sergio Reguilon, 27, arrived at Old Trafford on a six-month loan deal from Tottenham during last summer’s transfer deadline day. He featured 12 times for Manchester United and provided Erik ten Hag’s side with an option at left-back when Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were out injured. However, the Spaniard’s loan deal was terminated in January and he returned back to his parent club Spurs.

The 27-year-old then spent the second half of the past season on loan at Brentford. After the expiry of his short-term spell with Brentford at the end of June, Sergio Reguilon is now back at Spurs. It is understood that the north London club are willing to cash in on the Spanish left-back now with his contract expiring in 2025.

Reguilon is surplus to requirements under Ange Postecoglou, with Destiny Udogie the undisputed first-choice left-back at Spurs. AS claims West Ham United are also interested in signing the speedy left-back, although it is not clear how much is his valuation.

There is a dire need for a new left-back at Man United in the ongoing transfer window, especially after injury struggles of Shaw and Malacia. Shaw is an injury-prone player and cannot be relied upon anymore to be the club’s first-choice left-back. When he is fully fit and plays, the England international makes a huge difference to the team—in and out of possession.

However, there remain question marks on Shaw’s durability, which should be concerning for Ten Hag heading into his third season as the Red Devils boss. Malacia endured a disastrous 2023/24 season, failing to get on the pitch at all owing to complicated and botched knee surgeries. With doubts over the Netherlands international’s future at Old Trafford, the club are considering bringing in a new left-back.

Reguilon has emerged as an option to bolster the left-back position. While he performed with energy, intensity, passion and commitment during his loan spell, the Spaniard isn’t the answer to our team’s long-term left-back woes. Plus, he also has had injury issues over the last few years which doesn’t bode well for a club planning to sign a reliable left-back.

That said, there is no point going back for Reguilon. We must target a young left-back with high potential to replace Shaw in defence next season.
