Erik ten Hag made his first public appearance since securing his position at Manchester United when he appeared as a pundit on Dutch TV channel NOS. Despite Manchester United’s disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season, Ten Hag remains in charge following a positive end-of-season review, largely buoyed by his FA Cup triumph.

On Sunday, while serving as a pundit for Dutch TV, Ten Hag expressed some pending details over signing a new contract. He revealed the unexpected way he learned of his retention at Old Trafford. "Manchester United disturbed my holiday, they suddenly stood at my doorstep," Ten Hag said on NOS. "They [Manchester United] flew to me in Ibiza."

Despite the vote of confidence from the club, the Dutch manager highlighted ongoing negotiations about his future. "Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn't easily done, we are still going to have to talk about this."

Ten Hag detailed how INEOS, the club's majority shareholder, took their time reflecting on the season and exploring other managerial options. "INEOS took their time. They are new in football, it's normal to reflect [on] the season. It's no secret that they talked with multiple candidates. Here in the Netherlands, this is not done, in fact, it's not even allowed here. But in England they have different rules and laws," he explained

Ultimately, Manchester United's hierarchy decided to stick with Ten Hag after considering other high-profile managers, including Thomas Tuchel. "Manchester United have told me that they spoke with [Thomas] Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager," Ten Hag revealed.

Reflecting on Rashford's omission from the England Euro 2024 squad, Ten Hag was candid about the winger’s performance. "Grealish and Rashford were both lacking this season. And when you are lacking, you risk not getting picked for your country," he stated .

As Manchester United prepares for the upcoming season, the club's negotiations with Ten Hag regarding a new contract will be crucial. Everyone associated with Manchester United will be watching closely to see if the Dutch manager can guide the Red Devils back to their former glory.
