As Manchester United gear up for their home clash with Brentford, the team faces the possibility of being without up to 10 first-team players. Erik ten Hag’s injury list is long, with players across various positions either ruled out or facing late fitness tests. This situation could lead to some interesting decisions in terms of the starting XI, and fans are eagerly anticipating what the Dutchman will come up with. Increasing pressure over his job also makes the fixture a bit more tricky for Erik ten Hag this time.

Injuries and Uncertainty

United’s defence has been hit hard, with Leny Yoro and Tyrell Malacia still recovering from their long foot and knee injuries, respectively. Harry Maguire, fresh from a calf strain, will also be unavailable for a few weeks. The situation is further complicated by Noussair Mazraoui undergoing surgery, leaving United short on right-back options. However, late news by Erik ten Hag confirms he will be available for selection. The return of Victor Lindelof is a welcome boost, though, and he could slot into the centre back role alongside Lisandro Martinez, who is slowly regaining his form after a long injury layoff last season.

In midfield, Mason Mount is missing continuing his injury layoff, while Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo are also doubts with knee issues and illness, respectively. Manuel Ugarte, who limped off during Uruguay’s draw with Ecuador, will need to be assessed before the match. Luke Shaw and Mason Mount remain long-term absentees, though there’s hope that Shaw’s calf injury may soon be over.

Predicted XI and Tactical Adjustments

Despite the lengthy injury list, Erik ten Hag still has plenty of talent at his disposal. Based on current form and availability, a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely, which has been Ten Hag’s go-to this season.

In goal, André Onana has established himself as United’s first-choice keeper, and his shot-stopping ability and distribution from the back will be crucial. Despite United’s inconsistent start, Onana leads the league in clean sheets, something to cheer in an otherwise excruciating season for Manchester United amid the team’s defensive woes.

The back four will probably consist of Diogo Dalot at right-back, with Mazourai, filling in at left back. Dalot’s versatility will be crucial in this game, especially as he offers an attacking outlet with his forward runs. De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez could form the centre-back pairing, with Martinez offering his tough tackling and experience to the team. While Maguire had started the last few games, his absence could open the door for Lindelof, who is returning from a short spell out. Johnny Evans is expected to start on the bench after an influential game against Villa.

In midfield, Mainoo is expected to start, providing the necessary composure and steel. Christian Eriksen will likely partner him, with Bruno Fernandes playing further ahead in the number 10 role. Eriksen’s creativity has been one of United’s brightest sparks this season, and Fernandes will need to step up, having struggled for form so far. He has yet to score a goal this campaign.

In attack, Marcus Rashford is likely to start on the left flank, with Antony on the right. With Garnacho and Diallo both doubts, Rashford’s pace and directness will be key.

Up front, Rasmus Hojlund, who is still finding his feet after missing the early part of the season, is expected to lead the line. Although Joshua Zirkzee has featured more prominently recently and had a good outing in the international break, Hojlund’s all-round play, including his ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play, makes him the likelier starter.

Finding Form Amidst Challenges

It’s no secret that Manchester United’s start to the season has been underwhelming, with three losses and two draws in their opening seven games. However, despite the injury concerns, Ten Hag will be eager to field his best available team to secure a much needed victory against Brentford. With the fans behind them at Old Trafford and the talent within the squad, United has the necessary firepower to get back on track. The predicted XI, while not United’s first-choice lineup, still boasts plenty of quality capable of turning their fortunes around.

Fans will be hoping that this is the turning point for the Red Devils as they look to shake off their early season struggles and begin climbing the Premier League table.
