Man United must be losing sleep after Chelsea exposed this brutal £30m mistake

Things are ticking at Chelsea right now, but at Man United, that statement couldn't be further from the truth. The Blues have returned to the Champions League, won the Conference League, and are standing in great stead in the Club World Cup.

Oh, and they're signing players too, which is more than can be said for Man United.

So far, Man United has only signed Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, with the hopes that Bryan Mbeumo will follow. Sure, those goals from out wide will help United, but they still need a central goal threat, which hasn't followed.

They had the chance to add this, but let Chelsea have all the glory.

Chelsea made Man United look like fools

This summer, Chelsea secured their transfer business early by signing Liam Delap. Thought to provide Nicolas Jackson's threat without being nearly as hotheaded, it was perfect business for the Blues. Surprisingly, Delap only cost them £30m too.

In hindsight, this is a move that Man United should have pounced on. Even if it meant going slightly over that £30m threshold. The more time that progresses, the more that Man United look like bigger losers in this case.

With a goal and an assist already in the Club World Cup, Liam Delap has proven he can make the next big step up. So, why on earth didn't Man United sign him?

Man United is the victim of its own actions

The truth is that Man United's summer transfer window entirely depends on selling players. Sure, the club has all the revenue in the world, but PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) prohibit clubs from spending as much as they can. Plus, Man United needs space in the squad.

Obvious names are being linked with moves away, including Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho. However, as it stands, those players are still at the club.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work like "oh, we'll sign other players now and sell the rest later." Man United needs assurance that those players will be moved on.

We've said it time and time again, but Man United is the prisoner of its own self-inflicted crime. They have paid their players extortionate wages which they shouldn't expect to move on from so fast. Now, Man United struggles to sell players, which leaves them with no choice but to watch great striker options find new clubs.
