Manchester United’s next great number 10 was another Scot and almost joined bitter rivals Liverpool. However, assistant manager Paddy Crerand convinced Macari to join the Red Devils.

Macari was crucial in ensuring United clinched the second division title as he finished the season second top goalscorer with 11 goals. He also won a number of FA Cup medals, one of them being a winners medal in 1977 when just under 100,00 crammed into the Old Wembley to watch United defeat rivals Liverpool 2-1.

The Scotsman left Manchester United in 1984 to test the water in management. However, he will always remain a fans favourite at the club since having a fish and chip shop on Sir Matt Busby Way named after him.
