It seems although United have a plethora of players capable of playing center midfield, only Herrera and the ageing Carrick have done so with any success. Marouane Fellaini recently signed an extension but he is more of a squad player than anything else.
William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon is primarily a defensive midfielder but he can distribute the ball well and knows where the back of the net is. The midfielder has been a mainstay of the Sporting team since 2011 and won the European Championship with Portugal in the Summer.
