Centerback

It’s in the central defence positions where United have really struggled over the last few seasons due to injuries. When fully fit United posses four strong centerbacks in Smalling, Rojo, Jones and Bailly. However all these players are still young and could do with some assistance. Daley Blind has spent a lot of time in this position, but he is clearly not a centerback.

His lack of pace, height and positional awareness has cost United on numerous occasions. If City had played Aguero and not Iheanacho in the recent EFL game they would have won without a doubt. Blind drifted over to his favored left hand side far too many times leaving large gaps that City failed to capitalize on.

There have been a few defenders mentioned in the media, however the one who stands out is another Southampton player in Virgil Van Dijk. At 26-years-old he should be entering his prime, with good pace, height and ability to read the game. All these attributes make him a perfect partner for either Smalling or Bailey.
