"Take the risk", "Deserves a chance" - Fans urge Ten Hag to use Manchester United youngster

Erik ten Hag is expected to deploy Jonny Evans as a makeshift left-back against Brentford this Saturday (October 19) due to an injury crisis. Manchester United fans are pondering when Harry Amass will get an opportunity in the first team.

Manchester United fans want Harry Amass to be given a chance in Erik ten Hag's first team amid reports Jonny Evans is set for a spell at left-back. The veteran defender was man-of-the-match in the Red Devils' 0-0 draw against Aston Villa (October 6).

An injury crisis means United are short at left back. Noussair Mazraoui is sidelined, forcing Diogo Dalot back into his preferred right-back role. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are still on the injury table, and Ten Hag will turn to Evans, 36, to cover the left side of defence, per The Mirror.

The Bees have been quick starters this season and boast a pacey frontline with Bryan Mbuemo in excellent form. This could be problematic for Evans whose reading of the game is still earning plaudits but, given his age, could struggle to deal with a runner like Mbuemo.

Manchester United fans feel Harry Amass is the answer

Harry Amass, 17, is one of Manchester United's most exciting young talents to emerge from the club's academy. He impressed during pre-season, showing similar playing traits to Shaw, providing an option on the overlap and he's also left footed.

Given the injury toll fans can't understand why Amass hasn't appeared in a matchday squad under Ten Hag this season. He's flourished for the U21s, posting three assists in 21 games and appears ready to make the step up to the senior team.

One fan highlighted Amass' performance during pre-season and how he linked up well with Marcus Rashford:

"I’m shocked that Ten Hag hasn’t even had Harry Amass on the bench for one game this season, especially given that we have 0 fit LB's. I know he needs to develop physically, but his ability on the ball during pre-season was fantastic, even under pressure. Having a left-footer to overlap and release the ball quickly to Rashford worked really well.
"

Another fan gave a similar stance while alluding to Ten Hag's use of former midfielder Sofyan Amrabat as an emergency left-back last season:

"I watched a half fit Amrabat play left back for Manchester United, surely Amass deserves a chance given the current situation. It probably is a little early but he held his own against Salah in pre-season, I think he at least deserves to be making the bench."

Another fan wrote:

"If we play Jonny Evans at left-back instead of Harry Amass I will be convinced ten Hag is trying to get sacked.
"

Red Devil Armada Verdict

It's frustrating heading into yet another season with issues at left-back plauging Ten Hag's team. It was a problem that needed rectifying in the summer but INEOS prioritzed strengthening midfield, attack and central defense.

Amass has all the tools to become Shaw's long-term replacement at left-back. His age shouldn't prevent him from being used to deal with the injury crisis. Ten Hag placed his trust in Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho during their teenage years and they've become vital at Old Trafford.
