Raphael Varane, the former Manchester United and France defender, has announced his retirement from football at 31. Varane, who joined Italian club Como in July after spell with the Red Devils, was forced to make this decision after suffering a serious knee injury on his debut against Sampdoria in Coppa Italia back in August.
Varane joined United in the summer of 2021 for an initial £34 million from Real Madrid, where he had a trophy laden career, winning multiple La Liga and Champions League titles. At Old Trafford, Varane's arrival was seen as a major transfer, with his winning experience expected to boost United's defence, which was struggling. Despite battling multiple injuries, Varane made 95 appearances for the Red Devils during his three-year stay at the club.
One of the highlights of his time at United was helping the club secure the Carabao Cup in 2022, followed by a memorable FA Cup final win over rivals Manchester City in May 2024. His leadership traits and composure in defence were vital, and though injuries hampered his progress, Varane's presence was always a calming influence on the team.
United posted a tribute to Varane, saying, "You represented our colours with great distinction during your three seasons at Old Trafford. We thank you for your humility, leadership, and commitment. Once a Red, always a Red."
Reflecting on his retirement decision, Varane said, "I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of." While Varane’s career comes to an end, his contributions to Manchester United will always be remembered by the club and its fans.
