Liverpool have seemingly had an open checkbook this summer (remember when Jurgen Klopp said they couldn't compete with Manchester City financially?), but one potential target was recently spotted in a Manchester United shirt.
Enter Malick Fofana.
The Lyon winger has reportedly drawn interest from several clubs in this summer's transfer window. According to Ahad Shaukat of CaughtOffside, Liverpool are "closely monitoring" the Belgium international.
No matter where he plays his football this season, Fofana has become a hero among Man United fans after a photo of him wearing a Marcus Rashford United shirt went viral. That's one way to upset Liverpool fans.
Could Man United join the race to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon?
United got a (brief) look at Fofana during their thrilling 5-4 win over Lyon in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final. He came off the bench in the 64th minute at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old is a rising star, and ESPN's Alex Kirkland believes he could leave Lyon for a fee in the region of £40-45 million this summer.
While it feels possible United could get involved, signing Matheus Cunha and (likely) Bryan Mbeumo probably rules it out. Fofana has experience playing across the front three, but his primary role is on the left wing.
Ruben Amorim's side have far too many other priorities to spend decent money on another winger, although £40-45 million for Fofana may end up being a bargain.
Perhaps he stays at Lyon. Maybe Liverpool will still make a move. We certainly hope not, but at least it would create the hilarious scenario of their fans having to make excuses for why he wore a United shirt.
His future is undoubtedly something to watch this summer, but United have other priorities. They need to get the Bryan Mbeumo deal over the line, find a striker, and sell several players. Goalkeeper is also likely on the list.
But we wouldn't argue with them making a move for Fofana. Not only is he a talented young player with huge potential, but we already know he looks great in a United shirt.
