Man United may have just found their dream keeper (and it’s not Diogo Costa)

Man United needs a goalkeeper, and they need one urgently. Thankfully, Ruben Amorim can sign Marco Carnesecchi for miles cheaper than Diogo Costa.

Ruben Amorim faces a mammoth task this summer. He's already got the ball rolling with forward additions, namely Matheus Cunha confirmed and Bryan Mbuemo in the pipeline.

However, Man United's problems start before the offence, so they need to think about strengthening in other positions too.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Man United will dabble in the goalkeeper market this summer. A few names have already been doing the rounds, but all the signals point towards Marco Carnesecchi being their best option.

Marco Carnesecchi is Man United's budget friendly option

According to Gianluca di Marzio, Man United's preferred option to challenge Andre Onana is Marco Carnesecchi. Looking at all of the conditions, it's impossible to argue against this.

As pointed out by Dan Owen of United in Focus, there are three main reasons why Man United are leaning towards Marco Carnesecchi rather than their other two options, Emiliano Martinez and Diogo Costa. Those reasons are related to finances, age and squad practicality.

The first reason is Marco Carnesecchi would be available for much cheaper than Diogo Costa. He doesn't have the same premium price tag as the Portugal international, meaning Man United would be able to invest those same resources elsewhere and get "two for the price of one."

I know what you're thinking, a team like Man United doesn't need to count their coppers. They are one of the highest revenue-driving clubs in the world and have shown an ability to splash the cash in the past.

However, who can turn up their nose at a bargain? Nobody, not even one of the wealthiest sports clubs in the world.

Marco Carnesecchi trumps Emiliano Martinez for age

Emiliano Martinez is obviously a world-class goalkeeper with great quality, but there's a worry that his better days are behind him now. After all, he ages at 32 years old, so he is soon to enter the final years of his prime, if they haven't been already.

On the other hand, Carnesecchi is just 24 years old, so eight years younger than the senior Martinez. This leaves Carnesecchi with more room to grow and adapt, and he isn't near hitting his prime yet, which works for United.

It's important to mention that goalkeepers can reach ages that outfield players can't. This is due to their role naturally being less physically exhaustive and, surprisingly, less prone to injury.

Man United need competition, not an Andre Onana replacement?

Despite popular fan belief, Owens rightly points out that Man United might require competition for Andre Onana, rather than outright replacing him.

After all, Onana has the ability to be a great goalkeeper, he just needs to regain his confidence again. He might be forced into kicking it up a gear with worthy competition beside him, and that sense of healthy competition is great for both goalkeepers.

If Man United follow this line of thinking, then it makes more sense to sign Carnesecchi rather than Martinez or Costa. After all, it's only easy to imagine of those three options gladly accepting a competitive role.
