Anthony Elanga is on the precipice of joining Newcastle United to play in the Champions League, two years after leaving Man United.
Man United fans are no strangers to seeing their former players join league rivals. After all, it's a pretty common trend that Man United players, especially in recent history, go on to be better players elsewhere.
This is the unfortunate reality of being a small fish in a big pond - That fish seems a lot bigger when it leaves the big pond and joins a smaller pond.
The case can certainly be made for Anthony Elanga, who surprised everybody when he shone for Nottingham Forest last season.
Anthony Elanga nears Newcastle United transfer
Now, Anthony Elanga could be on his way out of the East Midlands, so soon after having his eventual breakthrough season. Elanga has earned the upgrade to play for a Champions League club.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Anthony Elanga has travelled today for the first part of his Newcastle United medical. This update came soon after Romano dropped the initial "Here We Go" label on the deal.
Admittedly, this is a deal that makes perfect sense. Elanga has been making serious waves, and he deserves his shot at playing European football. With Newcastle fostering young, hungry talent, nobody can argue with this deal.
It's bittersweet to see a former Man United player shine
Elanga is a tricky winger, one that just makes things happen whenever he has the ball at his feet. With the ability to drop his shoulder or pull a trick from out of his sleeve, he's frustrating to defend against. His unpredictability helps with that, as Man United fans may recall.
At Man United, Elanga can go down as "right player at the wrong time." While there was no denying the excitement he elicited at the club, he was put at a disadvantage by other players coming through the ranks at the same time as him.
Nevertheless, there is no harsh feelings from Man United fans towards Elanga. It's great seeing him achieve success, if only it were in a Man United shirt.
