Michael Carrick will not have an easy start to his first game as Manchester United’s caretaker manager by any stretch of the imagination. The Red Devils face an important contest against Villarreal which could have major implications on their European season. A win will seal their place in this season’s Champions League knockout phase. A defeat though will completely open up the group heading into the final matchday.

Thus, Manchester United should definitely be hoping to get a result away in Spain. Although, considering their recent form, that is easier said than done. But Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible run of scoring in the Champions League this season should give them some hope going into the game.

Carrick was part of Solskjaer’s coaching team and thus, one would not expect him to make huge changes to things. But even then, the former Manchester United star could try to make his mark on this side.

Thus, the Manchester United starting XI in the upcoming game against Villarreal will be very interesting to say the least. But it does feel like Carrick will stick to the 4-2-3-1 formation that had been used under the management of Solskjaer for so long.

GOALKEEPER: David de Gea

David de Gea has arguably been Manchester United’s best player this season. There have been so many games where he has kept the Red Devils in the match almost on his own with some incredible saves.

Thus, while the club have an excellent option in Dean Henderson as well, it is hard to see the Spanish goalkeeper being dropped now or anytime soon, considering the form that he has been in for the majority of this season.
