Manchester United have shown some great progress during the time of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the manager of the club. They finished second in the Premier League last season and as runners up in the Europa League. Also, they were a difficult team to beat for the majority of the 2020/21 campaign.

Thus, the signs are very promising. But at the end of the day, the Red Devils are yet to win a trophy under the Norwegian manager. And he will need to change that as soon as possible.

The club have made some tremendous signings in this summer transfer window and they must be considered as one of the frontrunners for the Premier League title heading into this season.

But on the other hand, some players are expected to depart as well, one of them being Phil Jones. Some recent rumours had suggested that the club could be ready to let him leave on a free transfer but Solskjaer’s recent comments do suggest that he has the defender in his plans. As reported by Express, the manager said:

"“I’ve had similar troubles in my career. He’s such a professional, good lad, and it’s great to see him ready to train again and hopefully he can first of all train with us and then hopefully get game time soon.“If he can play in the Under-23s to start with, or we can arrange something behind closed doors for him, because I know exactly the feeling [of] being out for so long. You just want to feel your way in.“He’s always served the club, but it was time for him to look after himself and his own health, but now he’s ready to train with us.”"

Does Jones have a future at Manchester United?

Jones has been out of action for over a year now and did not make a single appearance in the 2020/21 season. As a result, the most important thing for him now will be to get fully fit and feel his way back into football.

Still just 29 years of age, Jones has been at Old Trafford for over a decade now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 224 appearances for the club in that span of time.

He could find himself very far down Solskjaer’s pecking order when he returns to action though. With the club having agreed a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid this summer, the depth at centre-back is very impressive. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe are already in the squad.
