It has been a while since Anthony Martial made an appearance for Manchester United. The reason for that is a knee injury which has seen him spend time on the sidelines and miss the club’s fixtures in the Europa League as well as the Premier League for the past couple of months or so.

There have been question marks over whether the Frenchman would be making a return to the pitch this season. The initial feeling was that he could be out for the rest of the campaign.

But it seems that the striker is recovering well from his problem and there is a possibility that he could still be available for the Europa League final against Villarreal.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer has revealed that Martial is ‘looking good’ and has started jogging outside. As reported by the club’s official website, the manager said:

"“Anthony’s looking good. He has just about started outside jogging, which is the first step on the rehab of course.“He’s done most of the work in the gym and to see him out there getting some fresh air is good and hopefully we will see him before the season is out. He’s supporting the team, he wants to be a part of the final and he’s working hard to be available before that.”"

The Manchester United star could still make his return to action this season

In the absence of the Frenchman, Edinson Cavani has stepped his game up and is in red-hot form at the moment. The Uruguayan striker has been scoring goals consistently over the past month or so and has been one of the biggest reasons behind Manchester United’s brilliant form lately.

Thus, even if Martial is able to return to fitness before the end of the season, it is likely that he will be behind Cavani in the pecking order.

One also has to question whether his long-term future at the club lies at striker. While he did do spectacularly in the previous season, he has failed to find the back of the net on a consistent basis this time around.

That is a discussion for another day though. For now, the most important thing is for Martial to get back to fitness and make his return to the pitch.
