Manchester United have had a very promising 2020/21 campaign. At this point of time, they are sitting at second in the Premier League table and are the favourites to make it into the final of the Europa League after coming out with a 6-2 victory over AS Roma in the first leg of their semi-final tie.

But even then, you would feel that the club are a couple of steps away from where they will want to be. The ultimate aim of the Red Devils will surely be to return to the top of English football and challenge for the Champions League on a consistent basis. In that regard, they are not quite there yet.

Thus, it would not be surprising to see the club make a couple of waves in the upcoming summer transfer window with the view of further improving the squad.

While a number of positions in the team might need reinforcements, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appeared to drop a hint regarding a possible move for a centre-back. As reported by Manchester Evening News, he said:

"“Victor and Harry have been solid, very reliable and have created a very good relationship.“Eric Bailly has just signed a new deal, Axel [Tuanzebe] has played very well when he’s had the chance and hopefully we will have a new player in Phil Jones next season when he’s fit, he’s worked very hard to get fit.“But we are always looking for improvement, always looking at every department and if there are players that come in and challenge them or take their place that’s great.“I have felt that myself at Manchester United and that is the way it has to be at Man Utd. We sign players to challenge the ones we have here already and if you don’t step up players will take your place. That fear of losing your position has to be there.“I always felt that when the gaffer signed new strikers I had to step up, get better and make sure he didn’t want to sell me.”"

Manchester United could make a move for a new centre-back this summer

While Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have managed to form a formidable partnership in the heart of defence, there has always been the feeling that it is an area which the Red Devils can improve upon further.

Thus, it should not come as a surprise that the club have been linked with a number of centre-backs over the course of the last several months.

Names like Raphael Varane, Pau Torres, Jules Kounde, Nikola Milenkovic, Sergio Ramos and many others have been brought up as potential transfer targets for Manchester United at one point or another. Now, it remains to be seen who they end up signing if they do indeed make an addition at centre-back over the summer.
