Manchester United are expected to strengthen at the back in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The duo of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice pairing in the heart of defence throughout the course of the campaign. And while they have done very well on most occasions, there is a feeling that that is an area which can be improved upon further.

As a result, the club have been linked with a number of centre-backs over the course of the past several months and one of them has been Villarreal’s Pau Torres. The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the best defenders in La Liga in recent years and is a regular in the Spanish national team now.

As reported by El Larguero (via The Sun), they are closing in on Torres. It is also believed that they are hoping to get a deal done before he joins up with the Spanish squad for Euro 2020.

Torres could be a brilliant signing for Manchester United

It is safe to say that Torres is one of the most highly-rated defenders in world football at the moment. As a result, signing him would be seen as a major coup on the part of the Red Devils.

He is believed to have a release clause of £43.4 million currently, but that will rise to £56.4 million in the final 15 days of the summer transfer window. Thus, it is not hard to see why Manchester United would want to get a deal over the line quickly for him.

Signing someone like Torres could be a brilliant move on the part of the club. Not only is he a good defender but he is also left-footed, which will bring something different to the backline and open up a lot of interesting tactical possibilities.

Other top players like Raphael Varane and Jules Kounde have also been linked with the club in recent months but if they end up signing Torres, it is very unlikely that they will sign another centre-back in the summer.
