After the appointment of Ole Gunner Solskjaer as the manager of Manchester United, the club have progressed massively over the course of the past couple of years. And they have improved in the recruitment of players as well, which we can already see in the form of Bruno Fernandes, who has been one of the best players in the Premier League ever since arriving at Old Trafford.

There are still a number of areas that they can strengthen further in though. And one of them appears to be at centre-back.

The club have been linked with a number of defenders over the past several months. And one such individual is Raphael Varane who could possibly end up leaving Real Madrid in the near future.

There have been rumours linking him away from the Spanish giants in the recent past. And he refused to discuss his future, as the situation had not changed. As reported by Manchester Evening News, he said:

"“I am not going to state the obvious, I have already expressed myself a lot on the subject. I think it has already been said and the situation has not changed.“I am two days away from an international match with the national team, I am concentrating on that. I don’t want to answer that question on my future.”"

Can Manchester United sign Raphael Varane?

The 2018 World Cup winner has a contract with the Galacticos until the summer of 2022, but it seems like there is a possibility that the Frenchman could end up leaving the club sooner. If he does intend on leaving, Real Madrid would most probably try to find him a new home this summer rather than lose him for nothing a year later.

It will not be an easy job for Manchester United to sign the centre-back though as a number of clubs are expected to be after the Frenchman, who is considered to be one of the best defenders in the world right now.

He is not the only centre-back who has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent times. But signing a defender of Varane’s quality, with a proven record of winning titles on a consistent basis at the top level, could make them Premier League contenders immediately.
