Manchester United star is considering a short-term loan move to another Premier League club to get some regular playing time under his belt.
Prior to the start of the 2020-21 campaign, Manchester United fans were worried about several aspects of the team. The right-back position, however, was never amongst them.
It was the left-back spot that got altered following the arrival of Alex Telles. The Brazilian arrived for a modest transfer fee of £15.4 million, strengthening an area which had been viewed as a weakness in recent times despite the presence of the likes of Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams.
On the opposite flank, the Red Devils let Diogo Dalot leave on a season-long loan to AC Milan. Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Aaron Wan-Bissaka remained the only suitors for the position, while many assumed that United could give Williams a shot there.
A natural right-footed wing-back, Williams had played there for United’s U23s until the rapid emergence of Ethan Laird drove him to the left-back spot.
Luke Shaw sustained a long-term injury last season, hence opening a slot for Williams to flourish as the club’s first-choice left-back for quite some time. In his breakthrough campaign for the Old Trafford faithful, he made 17 Premier League appearances, which led to him penning a long-term contract renewal that will keep him at Old Trafford till 2024.

Since then, he hasn’t featured much, neither as a left-back nor as a right-back. Definitely not as much as one might have expected at the start of the season. And there are seemingly some concerns brewing regarding his future at Old Trafford.
According to a report published in Manchester Evening News, the youngster is looking to move to another Premier League side on loan in order to secure some consistent playing time for the rest of the campaign. Newcastle United and Southampton are understood to have shown interest in his services.
While Newcastle United are ready to agree a loan deal, Southampton are inclined towards a permanent deal.
The 20-year-old wing-back has made only one appearance – a cameo that lasted for six minutes – in Premier League this season and just seven across all competitions. And as far as Williams’ future is concerned, it would be better for Manchester United to loan him out for the remainder of the campaign.
