The out-of-favour Manchester United star has continued to train on his own as his future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
In terms of the goalkeeping performances, Manchester United had a topsy-turvy 2019-20 campaign. David de Gea was leaking goals at an alarming rate. Yet, he was the preferred number one for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But as soon as the summer transfer window opened, Solskjaer gave Dean Henderson a contract renewal and made him stay at Old Trafford, assuring the Englishman that he would get enough first-team football to satisfy his appetite.
Some might now think that it was Henderson’s return from his two-year loan spell at Sheffield United that blocked Sergio Romero’s pathway to the first team. But it would be wrong to mark hiss arrival as the only reason for the ongoing perplexities surrounding the Argentine’s future at Manchester United.
To be clear, Romero was Solskjaer’s preferred choice in the cup games last season. He seemed fixed with what he was doing with the Argentine veteran. However, the Norwegian gaffer contorversially opted to field De Gea between the posts against both Chelsea in the FA Cup and Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals.

And, as revealed by The Athletic, those decisions from Solskjaer sowed the seed of what eventually turned out to be Romero’s determination to leave the club at any cost last summer.
He was close to joining Everton on deadline day of the summer transfer window. But he wasn’t allowed to leave, with rumours claiming that the club didn’t want to help strengthen a rival right away. As a result, the move fell through.
According to a local Argentine outlet Pasta de Campeon, Romero is doing his training lessons with coach Ale Santillán in Argentina to keep himself fit. The 33-year-old veteran is out-of-favour at Old Trafford, having been excluded from Premier League 25-man squad earlier this season.
After making 61 appearances across competitions for United, Romero is hoping to move to new pastures in January. Though, he will not be available for free as his contract with the club is set to expire in the upcoming summer.
