The Manchester United star seems to be closing in on an Old Trafford exit following the arrival of Dean Henderson.

Manchester United weren’t able to offload players on the fringes of the squad in the last transfer window and therefore now appear to have too many players going into the season. However, one man may be close to leaving the Red Devils. David De Gea’s backup from last season and Argentina veteran, Sergio Romero has been linked with a move away.

The player’s wife, Eliana Guercio, publicly spoke of her disappointment towards the club for not letting her husband chase first-team opportunities elsewhere. Everton were rumoured to be close to a move for him but it failed to materialise.

With the transfer window still open for clubs to do business from some parts of the world, there may yet be an opportunity for the likes of Romero to seek moves elsewhere.

Reports from the Daily Mail suggest that Romero has targeted a move to the United States to make a fresh start to his career.

With Dean Henderson’s return from his successful loan spell at Sheffield United, the Argentine has fallen further down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Earlier, Romero was always the first choice when it came to cup competitions like the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League.

Now, with Henderson likely to take up those minutes, Romero’s exit from Old Trafford seems to be a natural consequence. His wife’s comments have further heightened tensions surrounding the entire situation.

As reported by the Daily Star. she said:

"“Sergio Romero worked hard for his club.“Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him. He helped the team reach 4 finals/semifinals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all.“It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!!!!”"

The transfer window for the MLS is open until October 29, which means there is still plenty of time left to do business. No doubt that a move for Romero would be a significant financial commitment. It will be interesting to see where the Argentina no.1 ends up.
