5. Alessio Romagnoli (Milan)

Another young centre back who is being targeted by Mourinho is Milan’s 23-year-old Alessio Romagnoli. A product of the Roma youth academy, the Italian is known as an elegant and versatile left footed centre back with a great technique and passing. Romagnoli is the main man of Gennaro Gattuso’s defence and has impressed the Italian which lead to Gattuso naming him as the captain of the AC Milan side despite his age.

Beginning his career with Roma, he moved on to Sampdoria on a loan following which he joined Italian giants Milan in 2015.

Romagnoli is known for his confidence in possession and his ability to play the ball out from the back. He had a spectacular 92% passing accuracy in the 2017-18 season. He is also capable of playing as a left back in a back four. He has been very effective in the air and is an excellent timer of his challenges which made pundits draw comparisons with Italian legend Alessandro Nesta whom Romagnoli described as his footballing idol.

The fact that he’s a capable leader at this promising age is a great positive which could have led Mourinho to label him as one of his targets. The signing of the Italian will strengthen the defence to a great extent as he’ll be one of the few left-footed centre-halves in the league. Recruiting him would also help United in attack.
