Romelu Lukaku, Striker

The Belgian is the Premier League’s third-highest scorer. On a per-minute basis, only Kane and Sergio Aguero have scored at a better rate than the 22-year-old.

Lukaku’s solo goal against Chelsea in the FA Cup demonstrated his finest qualities: speed, strength, power, positional awareness and a killer instinct in front of goal.

What’s more, the striker’s father claimed his son would benefit from a move to United or Bayern Munich in his search for Champions League football.

Lukaku’s form, his desire to play at the highest level, and United’s need for an out-and-out No. 9 means it could be a move that makes sense for all concerned.

However, Everton would understandably be reluctant to sell. They would (rightly) demand an exorbitant fee. Then there’s the Jose Mourinho factor. The Portuguese sold Lukaku to Everton and would need to swallow his pride if he were to sign him for United.

There are lots of ifs and buts involved, but Lukaku is a fine player and would greatly and immediately improve United’s options in attack.
