Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi has reportedly agreed to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. The Italian coach is one of European football's most highly-regarded tacticians and could be headed to Old Trafford.
According to InterLive, Inzaghi has accepted an offer after holding video calls with the Red Devils' hierarchy. He'll be handed a three-year contract and take over from Ten Hag, whose reign has been tainted with constant talk of dismissal.
Simone Inzaghi agrees to become Manchester United's next manager
Inzaghi's current deal with Inter expires in June 2027, and he's been in charge at the San Siro since July 2021. The 48-year-old has earned plaudits for the job he's overseen with the Nerazurri, guiding them to six major trophies including the Serie A title last season.
Inter have won 110 of 168 games under Inzaghi, playing in a 3-5-2 flat formation that has worked wonders. They sit second in Serie A, two points behind Napoli after eight games.
Inzaghi would become the first Italian manager to take charge of Manchester United if he were to arrive at Old Trafford. Speculation continues to grow over Ten Hag's future amid a dissapointing past season despite an FA Cup triumph.
Ten Hag signed a new one-year contract extension in the summer but his side have faltered so far this campaign. The Red Devils sit 12th in the Premier League, with three wins and as many defeats in eight games.
Manchester United's co-owners, INEOS, during last week's international break to discuss the ominous situation. There was an expectation that Ten Hag's job was under threat, but Fabrizio Romano claims that was never really the case.
The Red Devils may have sought a Ten Hag replacement for the long-term rather than an immediate replacement. Inzaghi would be handed an 'unlimited budget' to help take the club back to its glory days.
Red Devil Armada Verdict
Inzaghi is arguably one of the most in-demand tacticians in European football with a resume of transforming Inter back into a European powerhouse. He led them to the UEFA Champions League final two seasons ago where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.
The Italian frustrated Pep Guardiola in the same competition earlier this season with a 0-0 draw at the Etihad. The Nerazurri's defensive display was extremely impressive as they kept the likes of Erling Haaland quiet.
Ten Hag has been undermined by United's owners, but there's no escaping the poor performances under his watch. A split has felt inevitable but has been staved off, maybe because INEOS' top target has been unattainable to be an immediate replacement. Inzaghi fits the bill as the man to steer the Reds back to the promised land.
