Report: Donyell Malen could join Manchester United
Borussia Dortmund winger Donyell Malen could be on his way out of Signal Iduna Park at the end of the season. But where could he go?
Old Trafford could be a possible destination for the Dutchman, for whom rumours have recently circulated that he could be ready to move on from his time in Germany. The biggest sign of this has been the player changing his agency and switching to SEG, which is often a sign of a transfer away. This is the agency that manages Erik Ten Hag and played a key role in brokering the switch from Ajax to Manchester United for the 53 year old. They also have Sofyan Amrabat and Rasmus Højlund on their books, who moved to Old Trafford this summer.
Malen has enjoyed a productive time at Dortmund this season after a stuttering start to his career in Germany ever since his switch from PSV. It seems as though he has overcome questions over his proness to injuries that have riddled any rhythm or momentum for the 24 year old. However, this season he has scored 4 Bundesliga goals and has featured heavily in the Champions League group topping campaign for the Black and Yellows so far. Yet there is still wide discussions over his consistency in performances.
United aren’t the only Premier League side who have shown interest in the Dutchman. Liverpool could also be in the running for him as Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of the player and would do well to strengthen an attack where the foundations of success are already in place.
In contrast to the situation at Old Trafford, a lot of whether this transfer happens would depend on the future of Jadon a Sancho. A return to Dortmund could be on the cards for the Old Trafford outcast who is set to move on in January. Recent reports in Germany by BILD have suggested that a swap between Malen and Sancho could be an option. A move to Juventus is also a possibility for the Englishman. United would likely only move for Malen if the futures of Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are sorted out permanently.
At this present time, it looks very uncertain over United’s stance on any of these players currently with many question marks over what the summer transfer budget could look like ahead of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s imminent 25% takeover.
Red Devil Armada’s verdict:
With the above in mind, the likelihood of Malen coming to United look bleak around the current circumstances. However, the summer feels like a long time away and the forecast for United could look much better in a few months time. The future of Ten Hag is very much up in the air at the moment and the former Ajax manager could not even be the man in charge come the end of the season. Hence, the links to SEG may not be as eyebrow raising as it feels right now.
