Dimitar Berbatov gave a grim verdict of Manchester United's 0-0 draw away to Aston Villa that may not be enough for Erik ten Hag to keep his job. The Red Devils were tame in attack but had the impressive Jonny Evans to thank for keeping the Villans' usual frightening attack devoid of ideas.
The club's iconic former Bulgarian striker spoke on Sky Sports about the dull affair, and he urged the younger players to study Evans' display:
""I'm trying to find the right words. Everybody on the pitch today should be ashamed because Jonny Evans, credit to him, he's 37 and he's man of the match. The younger players should take notice and do better.""
Berbatov also expects the recent criticsm of United and Ten Hag to continue:
""I think the criticism will continue to grow because United need to win to get the points. They are 14th in the table which is unbelievable and the only way to correct it is to get the points. The only way to correct it is to get the points but the way they're playing at the moment, that's going to be hard to do.""Dimitar Berbatov
Manchester United leave Villa Park with a point but no sign of an upturn in form
Manchester United's woeful start to the season didn't show much improvement away at Villa Park. Some fans might be relieved to get a point against an in-form Villa side but the result leaves Ten Hag's side 14th in the league as Berbatov alluded to.
Bruno Fernandes was dissapointing but he went closest when his free-kick effort struck the bar. Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho also tried their luck at goal but rarely threatened Emiliano Martinez.
Jonny Evans was undoubtedly man-of-the-match for a dogged display at the back for the Red Devils. He kept Ollie Watkins and super-sub Jhon Duran quiet and those around him didn't look on his level at the back for the visitors.
What next for Manchester United?
Speculation over Ten Hag's future is still taking hold at Manchester United, and co-owners INEOS were at Villa Park to watch the lackluster stalemate. They have a huge decision to make during the upcoming international break about whether to sack the manager.
INEOS handed Ten Hag a new one-year contract extension in the summer, expecting to see a new and improved United. That hasn't been the case with new signings struggling and the Reds lacking form which is leaving them mid-table in the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League.
Next up is Brentford's visit to Old Trafford on October 19 and the Bees are tricky customers. There might be a new coach in the dugout for that game.
