Erik ten Hag’s Crucial Manchester United Days: Deliver or Depart?

Erik ten Hag must provide Manchester United fans with a reason to defend him. The Dutchman has struggled to persuade some United fans three years into his reign that the club is better off where he found them.

"Erik ten Hag out" chants have taken over the airwaves, stemming from Manchester United's poor start to the season. Eight games into the 2024-25 campaign, the Red Devils have only mustered three victories, three losses and two draws across competitions.

Last season, many United supporters felt that injuries hindered United's performance. However, with players returning from injury and fewer manageable injuries, along with significant financial investments, new signings, and a new structure in place, some now believe that United should be better. This season, fans needed to see results.

In the 3-0 loss to Tottenham, United had players like Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, Amad Diallo, Casemiro, and Victor Lindelof on the bench, demonstrating that even without Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, or Tyrell Malacia, they have a strong squad with plenty of depth.

What does Ten Hag require to get this club playing the football he desires?

The Red Devils have never played the Ten Hag way. He didn't have "his players" the first year, and there were injuries last season. Now, the former Ajax coach can't make excuses anymore. He has a decent squad with the majority of players he desired.

Manchester United fans must begin to see Ten Hag's preferred style of play, as well as results. This season, Red Devils fans have every right to criticise the manager and point out areas where they disagree with how he perceives football.

I'm not sure about you, but when I saw the line-up for the match against Spurs, I couldn't help but wonder what his best lineup was. Ten Hag prefers to adapt to each opponent we face rather than simply establishing a specific style.

6 wins in the last 20 Premier League games is unacceptable. Surely, this is relegation form. It's the third season, and I'm not seeing any evidence that we're on the right path. It's time for Ten Hag to demonstrate his true abilities, because why not.
