According to a report from BBC, Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has received his first call-up to the senior England squad for the forthcoming friendly fixtures against Brazil and Belgium.

The 18-year-old is enjoying a fantastic breakout season at Manchester United, producing performances like a seasoned pro in the middle of the park. He has made 20 appearances across all competitions, including playing 80 minutes in Man United’s thrilling 4-3 win over arch-rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.

Kobbie Mainoo, who is also eligible to represent Ghana, was initially named in the England Under-21 squad but his promotion to Gareth Southgate’s 25-man senior group speaks volumes about his maturity, potential and personality. The Man United academy starlet has been capped by the Three Lions at under-17s, under-18s and under-19s level.

The teenager, who endured a delayed start due to a pre-season injury, has not looked back since his first Premier League start in November’s 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park. Mainoo’s emergence as a starter has solved one of Erik ten Hag’s more grave problems and pushed far more experienced players such as Christian Eriksen and Sofyan Amrabat to the fringes.

With his consistent displays and calm demeanour on the pitch, the Stockport-born talent has won plenty of plaudits from the fans, teammates, the manager, coaching staff and pundits alike.

Red Devil Armada’s verdict:

Mainoo has represented England at youth levels but now has the opportunity to make his mark in the senior squad. The 18-year-old will be determined to earn his first international cap for the Three Lions in the upcoming friendlies.

The central midfielder’s promotion is yet another milestone that our famed academy staff can feel hugely proud of. If he goes onto feature for Southgate’s team, Mainoo will join a long list of players who have broken through our distinguished youth system to represent their nations.

On a personal note, I would have liked Mainoo to play for the England U-21s during this international break and gain further experience before being called into the senior side. Nonetheless, Mainoo deserves it and we are absolutely delighted for him.

Congratulations and good luck, Kobbie!
