Manchester United’s JJ Gabriel is set to join Real Madrid, with the Spanish side reportedly reaching a verbal agreement with the 16-year-old.

The deal has not yet progressed fully, but Gabriel is expected to depart Manchester for Madrid in January, subject to FIFA regulations surrounding the transfer of minors.

A myriad of European heavyweights had expressed an interest in Gabriel, although the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have seemingly been beaten to his signature by Madrid.

Gabriel informed United of his desire to leave and handed in a letter of deregistration in mid-September. The young prospect had become frustrated at the club, citing his lack of opportunities during pre-season—he was afforded just eight minutes against Atletico Madrid—as one of the reasons behind his decision to depart.

It seems that the move is now just a matter of time, with United unable to hold on to the youngster, despite vying for him to remain in Manchester.

Is Gabriel making the right decision?

The youngest player to score a UEFA Youth League hat-trick for Manchester United, there is no doubt that one of the most talked-about prospects in world football has slipped through the club's hands, as he makes his trip towards Spain.

The 16-year-old had seemingly grown tired of the lack of first-team opportunities and has decided to seek a pathway elsewhere.

But is this truly the right choice for Gabriel?

For most footballers, making their debut is one of the defining moments of their career. It is the first time they step onto the pitch alongside players who could be twice their size and twice their age.

Gabriel had the chance to experience this on September 16, when United faced Brighton in the League Cup, but he handed in his transfer request just a day before he was expected to be named in the squad. His decision to move to Madrid might perplex some supporters, with manager Jose Mourinho not renowned for placing his trust in youngsters.

However, since the appointment of Juni Calafat as chief scout, the club have moved away from focusing solely on established global superstars and have invested in youth, too.

The likes of Vinicius Jr, Endrick, and Rodrygo have all moved from Brazil to Spain, and in 2026 alone the club made in excess of £160 million by selling players from La Fabrica—Madrid’s academy—with the likes of Nico Paz, Gonzalo Garcia, Victor Munoz, and Mario Gila bringing in over £110m in sales.

The question remains whether Gabriel will get the chances at Madrid that he was offered at United. With a star-studded forward line that consists of the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius, and Jude Bellingham, it may be a harder task than expected for the teenager to break his way into the squad.
