Manchester United are reportedly showing concrete interest in Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies and fans think Luke Shaw's time at the club could be over. The Red Devils have been crying out for a new left-back amid long-term injuries to Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg reports that Davies is United's top target for the left-back role. United has made contact with the Canadian full-back's representatives. If he doesn't extend his contract with Bayern, the 23-year-old will be a free agent in the summer.
Talks between the Bundesliga giants and Davies are stalling and he's edging closer to the Allianz Arena exit door. He's been with the Bavarians since 2019 and developed into one of European football's most highly-regarded full-backs.
Plettenberg doesn't mention Real Madrid who have also been heavily linked with Davies. Los Blancos know the threat United pose with INEOS running the ship as the Reds beat the La Liga giants to Leny Yoro in the summer.
Manchester United's interest in Alphonso Davies is becoming concrete
Erik ten Hag has started the season having to rely on Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez performing as makeshift left-backs to deal with Shaw and Malacia's injuries. It's been a problem area for the club for over a year now.
Shaw looked to be fit in the summer after making appearances for England at Euro 2024. He didn't start a game in Germany and picked up another knock during pre-season, ruling him out for the start of the campaign.
Malacia hasn't been in action since the final day of the 2022-23 campaign due to a serious knee injury. The Dutch left-back has recently returned to training at Carrington, stepping up his recovery.
However, INEOS may feel the duo are too unreliable regarding their fitness issues and there's a golden opportunity to sign one of Europe's best attacking full-backs. Davies has lit up German football with his pace and agility, he's posted 11 goals and 32 assists in 205 games.
Fans react to Manchester United-Davies links
Red Devils fans gave interesting responses to reports linking the club with Davies and many feel his potential arrival will come at the expense of Shaw. One fan suggested:
"Tired of Shaw."
Another fan echoed those sentiments:
"Luke Shaw time to find another club."
One fan posted a meme to describe Shaw's likely response:
"Shaw after seeing this."
Another fan hailed Davies:
"Alphonso Davies is the best left back in world football and Utd should be commended for prioritising him as a critical transfer target next summer.Luke Shaw’s days at Old Trafford are surely numbered."
Red Devil Armada Verdict
Davies would be a remarkable acquisition, especially as a free agent and INEOS were to pull it off it would be, undoubtedly, their best coup since becoming co-owners. The Canadian has an abundance of experience, a ferocious left-foot and is the fastest full-back possibly in Europe. Shaw can't be relied on and it's time to move on from arguably the best English left-back for the best European left-back.
There are concerns over Davies' injury record but he's an opportunity to take given it would be a free transfer. It could also allow us to sell Shaw for a nice sum to further strengthen, perhaps signing a younger left-back prospect to accompany the Bayern man.
