When the summer transfer window opened it felt as though every single Manchester United player was available at the right price. Even Bruno Fernandes was a possibility to be sold if an astronomical fee arrived for the Red Devils captain.

That's how bad last season was for pretty much every single one of Ruben Amorim's squad. An overhaul was anticipated and INEOS have got to work on making significant changes, bringing Premier League proven due Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to Old Trafford.

Benjamin Sesko looks to be the next target and the Slovenian striker is open to joining United even without Champions League football. But his arrival is casting doubts over one of last season's strugglers who should consider biting the bullet.

Rasmus Hojlund wants to fight for his Man United future

As soon as speculation grew over a move for Sesko it ignited talk of Rasmus Hojlund making way. The Danish frontman joined United for £72m in the summer of 2023 but has failed to live up to expectations with poor form in front of goal.

Hojlund responded to talk over his future with an impressive performance and goal in a 4-1 win over Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly. He then firmly insisted he wanted to stay and fight for his place in Amorim's side.

The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell has revealed that when the 22-year-old entered the mixzone at Soldier Field he looked for media to interview him. The journalist quoted him as saying

“Does anyone want to talk to me?”

That's telling of how Hojlund is trying to quiet the noise regarding a potential exit. He is eager to remain with United but continuing together might not be what the club desire.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Hojlund was brought up by RB Leipzig in early discussions between the Reds and the German outfit. They proposed the Dane be included in a potential deal and it's thought that he's viewed as a "dream" signing for them.

Amorim continuously defends the under-fire forward but the pursuit of Sesko is telling. Romano also claimed that while nobody from United has told Hojlund that he must leave, if it came to it, he may consider his options.

Playing the long game with Hojlund wouldn't be worth it

INEOS have made their decision and decided to go all in on a long-term striker this summer rather than a quick-fix such as Ollie Watkins, 29, who knows the league well. They are putting their faith in Sesko to lead the line for years as part of a new era at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old is an upgrade on Hojlund let's make that clear while observers seem to be comparing the duo. He is the bigger talent who has shown his worth in Germany and in Europe's club competitions.

That's why by signing the Slovenia international you then have three young forwards and a headache for Amorim. Sesko is the starter but Joshua Zirkzee offers a different profile, able to play in several attacking positions.

United can't spend time waiting on Hojlund to come good anymore, he's been given chances time and time again. The patience has worn out amid a dismal past season that saw him manage just four league goals.
