Manchester United fans are ready for the Mason Mount era to end.
It felt inevitable. United have already upgraded their attack by securing the blockbuster £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha, and they are inching closer to landing a big-time move for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, who reportedly favors a move to Old Trafford over other interested clubs.
That means Mount is heading for the nearest exit, right? It doesn't sound like it.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Mount's future, noting that his "clear intention" is to remain with United.
"As of today, the end of June, the clear intention of Mason Mount is to stay at Manchester United. Mason Mount is planning to continue at Man United," said Romano.
"Mount is planning to have an important preseason, feeling well, being fully fit, working under Ruben Amorim, who always had important words for Mason Mount during his first season as Manchester United coach, always showing his full confidence in the player."
His desire to stay is one thing, but the final line about Amorim "showing his full confidence" in Mount is the real concern, potentially hinting at him remaining in Manchester this season.
Man United need to part ways with multiple attacking players, and that includes Mason Mount
Mount has failed to live up to lofty expectations in a United shirt, having landed a £55 million move from Chelsea almost two years ago to the day.
He has since started only 13 of a possible 76 Premier League contests, battling injuries throughout his United tenure and failing to produce when available. In two seasons, he has scored just twice with zero assists.
Mount works hard and gives everything when he's on the pitch, but it hasn't resulted in production. Some of it isn't his fault, of course. Injuries happen. But for Amorim to lead this team back into contention, United must commit to a full rebuild in the attacking areas.
They've made a dream start with Cunha, and Mbeumo will likely follow. Perhaps a solution is for Mount to provide depth off the bench, but United should try to maximize his transfer value and reinvest that money into the squad. They may never get back the £55 million fee they paid two years ago, but it's time to end the Mount experiment.
Don't bank on it, though. Based on Romano's latest update, all signs point toward Mount remaining at Old Trafford this season.
