Everton are believed to be close to contract extension for Jarrad Branthwaite. Yet another blow for Man United, who were previously linked to him.
Man United need to rebuild this summer, which leaves fans asking: where on earth are the signings? Only Matheus Cunha and Diego León have arrived so far this summer and, while Cunha is a great addition to the squad, he cannot do it all by himself.
In an ideal world, Man United would have an entire squad reshuffle in mind right now. One big-name signing doesn't scratch the surface of what they need to compete at the highest level.
Jarrad Branthwaite set to extend his Everton contract
Jarrad Branthwaite, who was previously linked to Man United, is close to penning a new deal with Everton. Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Branthwaite is set to accept a new deal with the Toffees, keeping him under contract until June 2030.
Branthwaite, who was interestingly handed his Everton debut by Carlo Ancelotti of all people, has what it takes to become an Everton legend. He's one of the most important players in their squad and is still in the earliest stages of his career.
So, Everton fans will be over the moon if Branthwaite sees out this decade in Merseyside.
Man United still need defenders
To say Man United need a defender is like saying plants need water and oxygen. Duh, right?
Man United need 11 new players and an entire bench if they're serious about competing again next season so, obviously, they need new defenders.
Last season, injuries to the defence is just one of the factors which cost Man United in the long run. Yes, they signed Leny Yoro, who came good in the end, but his start was halted by injury. So, squad depth is always under scrutiny at Old Trafford.
Jarrad Branthwaite won't be signed by Man United this summer, so fans can kiss goodbye to any remaining hope they had of that.
Looking ahead to the future, Ousmane Diomande could certainly be an option for Man United. However, unlike with Branthwaite, they'll need to get a move on there, with Crystal Palace already making moves in that regard.
