Another market in which United are likely to browse is the well proven breeding ground of talent that is the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Manchester United are monitoring the progress of Benfica starlet João Neves, with captain Bruno Fernandes eager for the nineteen-year-old to join him at Old Trafford.

Statistically, Neves is outperforming all of Manchester United’s deep midfielders and would represent a long term option should a move be sanctioned. A cheap deal for the teenager would be very unlikely as Benfica tend to get the most out of every transfer. In January the €121m transfer of Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea saw them make a €76m profit on their investment. While he would not cost the same amount as Fernandez, he has a release clause of €103m and any purchase close to that would be extremely risky for a player who has played fewer than 30 league games.
