England’s Lionesses suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss against Spain in an entertaining Women’s World Cup final on Sunday.

The match featured United’s Mary Earps and Ella Toone with Katie Zelem on the bench, whilst former Red Alessia Russo also started. On the winning side, another former Red – Ona Batlle, featured for La Roja as they were crowned world champions in Australia.

Olga Carmona’s goal was enough to win it for Spain, as she put one past United keeper Mary Earps after an error by Lucy Bronze. The England goalkeeper, who won the Golden Glove of the tournament, also saved a penalty to keep the Lionesses alive in the final right until the final whistle. Ultimately the task was too mighty for England, who fall at the final hurdle despite an impressive showing during the tournament.

Alessia Russo, who moved from United to Arsenal this summer, was taken off at halftime and Serena Weigmann’s side struggled without a focal point in the second half. Ella Toone was also substituted late on, unable to replicate a magical moment like her goal against Australia in the semi final. Katie Zelem did not feature in the final.

Ultimately the Lionesses were outclassed in midfield and could not do much against a brilliant Spanish team.
