Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has provided an update on young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and his current injury status – outlining when he expects the young midfielder to be back in action for the Red Devils.

The 18 year old suffered an injury in United’s pre-season tour of the US against Real Madrid, showing encouraging signs in what is expecting to be his breakthrough season at Old Trafford. That breakthrough has certainly been delayed, but Ten Hag does not expect Mainoo to be out for much longer – indicating encouraging signs in the recovery process.

In his press conference ahead of United’s game versus Spurs, Ten Hag said:

"At this moment, he’s not available but I think he will also, in say one, two months. Not in one month, but in two months, he will be available. And so, for the winter [that] is coming up, he absolutely will have his games.”"

The news will be a sigh of relief for United fans, who have been anticipating than Mainoo would have missed most of the first half of this season. Coming into the thick of games around October will provide some fresh, hungry legs in a dynamic midfield.

Casemiro is United’s only true defensive midfielder at the club, and Mainoo is very capable of playing that role. Concerns have been flagged that Casemiro at the age of 31 is not able to cover the excess gap left by Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandez on the transition, if early signs from the Wolves game are anything to go by.

Momentum may have been lost for now but it is a fact that Ten Hag highly rates the young teenager. If Garnacho was last season’s breakthrough talent, it seems we already have a favoured player who will be the next mainstay in United’s senior setup this campaign.
