Report: Manchester United eye Everton’s Amadou Onana
Manchester United will assess their midfield options by taking a keen interest in Everton’s Amadou Onana, according to Mail Sport.
The Everton midfielder is being targeted by manager Erik Ten Hag as an alternative to Sofyan Amrabat – should a move for the Fiorentina man not materialise as expected. The Moroccan is attracting interest from Juventus and Liverpool, so a bid is expected to be presented soon after Fred’s departure to Turkey. If United really want their man, they need to act sharp in light of Liverpool’s need to recruit a midfielder as well. Having been turned down by Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and not able to agree a few with Southampton for Romeo Lavia, Jurgen Klopp may decide to move for Amrabat soon.
United will be looking to recruit an extra man in midfield due to Fred and Donny Van De Beek’s impending goodbyes. It was expected that academy player Kobbie Mainoo would also fill in that depth, however an injury in the pre-season curtails his chances for the start of the season at least.
Bringing in a player like Amadou Onana would make sense in the profile of midfielder that Ten Hag is after. The Everton player in a tenacious box to box midfielder, who often can be described as an engine of a team. He is just 21 years old, which leaves lots of potential to fulfill. The Belgian was sought after his successful year in Ligue 1 with Lille, from whom Everton couped him for.
The Merseyside club have been on the ropes for a few seasons now in the Premier League, so if United move for Onana, it may not be surprising if the young talent would be keen on the move to Old Trafford himself, for his own personal development. This is certainly a story and a player to keep an eye on.
