Manchester United have begun talks with Bayern Munich over a deal to sign centre-back Benjamin Pavard to replace Harry Maguire, according to Sky Deutschland.

’All parties’ have reportedly been brought into discussions to bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford. The Bayern Munich defender only has one year left on his contract, and would command a fee of around €30million.

United boss Erik Ten Hag is keen on the centre-back and Pavard is receptive to moving to United as well, something which has been a common theme amongst arrivals this summer. It would be expected that Bayern may attempt to push back on the deal, given they want to keep the player so close to the Bundesliga season starting soon.

For his versatility, €30million would be a steal for someone who is capable of playing at right-back as well. With a number of Premier League clubs interested, it is encouraging that United have moved quickly here and the World Cup winner would provide stellar depth and experience to the Red Devils back line.

The necessity for depth at the back comes after the departures of fringe players such as Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe, Eric Bailly (reported), Teden Mengi (reported) and Alex Telles, as well as former club captain Harry Maguire soon.
