Manchester United transfer boost as Barcelona greenlight key target
Manchester United receive a major transfer boost regarding their pursuit of a key summer transfer target with Barcelona reportedly prepared to consider a sale.
It is a well-known fact that the Catalan giants are struggling financially with their massive wage bill heavily contributing to the departure of Lionel Messi in 2021. While president Joan Laporta has made major efforts to reduce the club’s expenses, recent claims suggest that the Spanish giants must further reduce their salary structure by £177 million in order to comply with La Liga rules.
Manchester United receive major news regarding Barcelona superstar
Mundo Deportivo has reported that Barca may be forced to make multiple sales in the summer transfer window in an effort to reduce their wage bill with Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong included in the major names to be offloaded.
Erik ten Hag has always been clear about his desire to bring the former Ajax midfielder to Old Trafford. De Jong is in a complicated situation at Spotify Camp Nou because despite his desire of wanting to stay and coach Xavi Hernandez also wanting the midfielder on his squad, things may not be in their control anymore.
The current wage bill is forcing the club to make salary cuts and despite De Jong already reducing his salary, reports have claimed that Barcelona want to renew him once again with even further cuts to comply with the league rules. Another problem is that Xavi has made it very clear that he prefers youngsters Gavi and Pedri to feature in most games, and with veteran Sergio Busquets and new signing Franck Kessié also at his disposal, the Dutch midfielder is facing a lot of competition for his spot in the starting XI.
If that wasn’t enough to pressure the midfielder into thinking about his future, Marca reports that the Catalan giants have held meetings with the uncle of Manchester City star İlkay Gündoğan in the hopes of securing him in the summer.
Considering the possibility of Gündoğan’s arrival, competition for the starting position, and pressures to reduce his salary even further, it is very much likely that the Dutch star might be forced to consider a move away from Camp Nou. Manchester United are keen on signing him and could possibly make his arrival a reality in the next summer transfer window, especially having reportedly reached an agreement to secure the midfielder for £56.2 million last summer.
