Manchester United interested in Leeds United goalkeeper
Premier League outfits Manchester United are reportedly interested in rival goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
According to a report from British news outlet The Sun, Dutch manager Erik Ten Hag has asked the Manchester United board to reinforce their goalkeeping position. The Dutchman has possibly indicated the contract renewal of current first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea and a new face to secure the future.
The player in sight is expected to be rivals Leeds United’s first-choice goalie Illan Meslier who has established himself as a proven shot-stopper in the Premier League. Only 22 years of age, the 6ft 4in Frenchman has a bright future ahead of him and considering Ten Hag’s project at United, Meslier would potentially be able to take De Gea’s place in the long term.
What’s the plan?
Though Dean Henderson will return from his loan at Nottingham Forest in the summer, he is expected to be sold upon his arrival as he wants to become a first-choice goalkeeper.
United’s plan would be to secure the signing of Illan Mesilier next summer before he becomes a hot product in the market. David De Gea is ageing and couldn’t be expected to start each and every match from next season, though the Spaniard has been in inspirational form.
The 32-year-old Spaniard is currently in talks with United to extend his contract but he will have to compromise on a pay cut considering the club’s finances.
On the other hand, Meslier has already promised himself a starting role for Leeds and has time on his side to develop thoroughly. The Frenchman will be a massive long-term acquisition for The Red Devils.

State of Play
United have only registered its interest in Illan Meslier and are yet to take any concrete steps. No significant move can be expected any time soon as the summer transfer window is far away. Ten Hag’s focus would be on his current squad and reassessing things at the end of the season.
The Reds are not the only club that will be in for Meslier but some competition is expected from mid-table sides.
