Manchester United looking to hijack Chelsea transfer plans
Manchester United need a new striker. That is no secret, with Cristiano Ronaldo expected to leave sooner or later, while Anthony Martial is not the most reliable of options due to his lack of consistency, even though he has looked very bright and effective under the management of Erik ten Hag.
Could Manchester United end up going an unconventional route though and bring in a forward who is much more flexible instead of being an out and out number nine?
The player in question is Rafael Leao, who has set Serie A on fire with his performances and played a key role in AC Milan winning the title last season. He has been heavily linked with Chelsea in recent times, but Manchester United seem to have their eyes on the Portuguese international as well.
As reported by the Daily Star, Manchester United have joined the race for Leao. The Portuguese ace is likely to be up for grabs next summer for around £60 million. His current deal runs out in 2024 and he is yet to agree an extension with AC Milan. Chelsea have been long-time admirers but now the Red Devils are ready to compete with their London rivals for his signature. They have had scouts watching the player.
Manchester United have joined the race to sign Leao from AC Milan
It goes without saying that signing Leao would be a major coup for most clubs in the world right now.
Yes, he is not the finished article yet, but he has all the attributes to be a top player. His dribbling ability is incredible and he is one of the best in the world in one vs one situations. He has an eye for goal as well, even though he is not prolific yet. Leao is just 23 years of age though and that aspect of his game could develop with time.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Leao has scored 4 goals and provided 7 assists in 12 appearances this season across all competitions.
