When Manchester United completed the blockbuster return of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus last year, it was considered as a dream move by many. The Portuguese legend had finally returned ‘home’. It is at the Theatre of Dreams that he had first showcased his incredible talents and established himself as one of the greats of the game. He had reached even further heights since leaving for Real Madrid.

Many fans believed that this return was written in the stars. He had come back to finally take Manchester United back to the top of the English game.

Well, the dream has turned into a bit of nightmare by now. Manchester United finished last season trophyless once again and this time around, Ronaldo has been reduced to an impact substitute, as he seems completely out of form.

Manchester United would have been hoping for him to rediscover some of his form during this international break, but that has not transpired. He failed to score against both Czech Republic and Spain, and even more worryingly, his performances were well below par.

Thus, the international break that Manchester United would have been banking on for Ronaldo to find form has come and gone.

For the first time in his career, it looks like Ronaldo is playing with no confidence and nothing is coming off for him. At 37 years of age, sooner or later, his standards were bound to drop. But this season, it feels like they have fallen off a cliff instead of a down trend.

Ronaldo’s only goal in this campaign has come from a spot kick and we are entering October. Manchester United do need him to find some form though as a direct result of their lack of options up top.

Marcus Rashford has started well but historically, he has not been the most consistent player and blows hot and cold. And there are question marks over Anthony Martial as well.
